Bringing Back the Lay Day
The Storm Trysail Club listened to competitors of past Block Island Race Week's, and there was an overwhelming call for finding a greater balance between the racing and the leisure on the island. We know five days of racing can be draining for many sailors, so we have brought back the lay day from early Race Weeks. These rest days were seen as a highlight of the event for families, friends, and competitors to enjoy all the beauty Block Island has to offer.
The Lay Day will be chosen based on weather and announced the day prior by the Race Committee.
Lay Day Events:
Sign up for the 1st Storm Tryathlon as a team or individual. Compete in all three or just one event!
Who said the lay day should be non-eventful? Not us. Thanks to our proud partners Margaritaville, North Sails and New England Ropes this a lay day will be a day to remember. Keeping your physical and mental health in mind, our Storm TRYathalon is planned to engage your muscles and your brain.
Register below for one or all three of the events, or better yet, join as a team and take on the day for the ultimate team prize . And because we cherish Block Island, the suggested entry fee for all these events is the purchase of a BIRW raffle ticket. All proceeds of the raffle tickets go to support island services and charities.'
Sailing shoes off and running shoes on, kick off the lay day with a morning 5K hosted by North Sails. Run solo, or with your TRYathalon team and get that morning run out of the way. Starting at the North Sails Service loft, located in the Block Island Maritime Institute, the route loops around and brings you to the finish line at the Narragansett Inn.
For those with a competitive streak, there will be North Sails Gear for the winners, ready to collect at the finish line – alongside some refreshments and snacks on North. The first 100 entrants will receive a North Sails hat, so don’t wait, register now.
You can tick off your morning exercise, now it’s time for Trivia. After you’ve showered and saw a bit of the island, grab your team and head over to the Margaritavaill Tent at the Narragansett Inn at 1pm for the first ever Block Island Race Week Trivia, presented by Margaritaville. Questions will cover all things BIRW, Block Island, and your partners, so bring your A-Game.
Finally, pull your determined team together to fight it out in the New England Ropes Tug-O-War. Wander down to the beach by the regatta tent at the Narragansett Inn at 3:30pm and test the strength of your crew against the rest. Make your way to the finals and win the day.
ABRAMS FARM TOUR
For something completely different, stop by the Abrams Animal Farm for a behind-the-scenes tour just for Block Island Race Week participants and their families.
The small farm between Spring and High streets is home to llamas, emus, sheep, donkeys, goats, swans, ducks and even camels. If you have kids, the animals will keep them entertained for hours. Lay-day organizers will announce the farm-tour time before the lay day. Sign up in advance so we can get a head count and contact you with meet up details:
